Dying Breath
Zebra Books May 2008
The first of two connected adult suspense novels, DYING BREATH will offer my longtime readers the trademark WCS elements they have come to expect: a domestic setting, plenty of twists and turns, a well-masked killer, and psychological, page-turning suspense without graphic sex, language, or violence.
Set on the Jersey Shore, DYING BREATH features Cam Hastings, a troubled heroine with a deep, dark secret. Haunted as a young adult by psychic visions of endangered children, she ultimately learned to block out the premonitions-at the expense of her marriage. When her unwitting husband moves out and she finds herself spending the summer alone at their beach house with their teenaged daughter, the visions return with a vengeance. This time, the endangered children she sees aren't strangers at all. As the premonitions hit closer and closer to home, Cam must fight to save her daughter from an unseen stalker who lurks nearby, watching, and waiting for the right moment to strike.
Add to the mix colorful secondary characters: Cam's willful daughter, Tess, who tries to evade the strangle-hold of her seemingly overprotective mother; Cam's ex-husband, Mike, who never stopped loving his family but can't seem to find his way home; Cam's father, Ike, a washed up doo-wop star whose glory days are long behind him; and finally, Philadelphia missing persons psychic Lucinda Sloan.
A Main Line blue blood now estranged from her family, Lucinda has some deep, dark secrets of her own. She'll be the heroine of the upcoming sequel to DYING BREATH, 2009's DYING LIGHT, in which Lucinda matches wits with the notorious "Night Watchman" serial killer in a cross-country race against time.
LILY DALE: BELIEVING
Walker Books for Young Readers May 2008
In the second installment of LILY DALE, a paranormal series for young adults, heroine Calla Delaney is still getting used to daily life among the dead. Now living with her grandmother in Lily Dale, New York, the birthplace of spiritualism and a lakeside Victorian town populated by mediums, Calla is haunted by some friendly and not-so-friendly entities, including the spirit of a murdered teenaged girl whose killer is still out there-and may have set his sights on Calla.
Hiding the truth about Lily Dale from her pragmatic professor father is more challenging than Calla expected when he shows up for a visit. If he finds out the truth about Lily Dale, Calla is certain he'll make her pack her bags and return to California with him. She has no intention of leaving now-especially with a love triangle heating up between Calla and two local guys, Blue and Jacy. Meanwhile, her ex-boyfriend Kevin unexpectedly pops back into her life, making her wonder if she will ever be able to get over their breakup and make a fresh start.
When she stumbles across new evidence that her mother's death might not have been an accident, Calla is more determined than ever to unlock the secrets of a mysterious stranger who may know more about her mother's Lily Dale past than anyone else, and may hold the key to what really happened to her-and whether it was murder.
